How do you define healthy cooking oils? If it is made from vegetables, is it considered healthy like the vegetables are? Technically no. What is labelled as vegetable oil sometimes ends up just being heavily refined soybean oil. In most instances, these oils end up not being the healthiest choice to make.

Oils such as cottonseed oil, corn oil and the like are mostly composed of polyunsaturated fats. These fats are highly reactive to heat and light. Since we consume them, they tend to be the reason why we get inflammatory internal problems such as heart disease, diabetes and other degenerative diseases.

All fats have to be eaten in moderation as they either tend to increase our cholesterol levels more and more. There has to be a ratio followed between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

1. Olive Oil
Olive oil has the power to lower your risks of heart disease and breast cancer possibly because of its high monounsaturated fat content which lowers cholesterol. Extra virgin oil is recommended since this is known to have less chemical toxins present than in ordinary olive oil.

2. Canola Oil
Canola oil is low in saturated fats and rich in monounsaturated fats. It contains an essential omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid which is hardly present in a person’s diet. Canola oil has a very mild taste so it is a great all-purpose cooking and baking oil.

3. Walnut Oil
Walnut oil is best when baking or making a salad. Like the canola oil, it has substantial amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. What is more, they are processed but not added with any chemicals which make them safe and healthy.

4. Sesame Oil
Sesame oil is much like canola oil because it has a very mild taste. You can use it for cooking without increasing your fat budget. In just small amounts, they can improve the taste of your food.

5. Sunflower Oil
Sunflower oil is inexpensive and is a good source for good antioxidant vitamin E. It contains most of your daily requirement and can even help lower your cholesterol level. Plus, it does not smoke unpleasantly when you are frying.

It is hard to find healthy cooking oils because most of them are processed and sometimes, to make sure that they will be preserved even in room temperature, they are added with some chemicals that we hardly know about. It is best to consult the nutrition facts which can be found either in their website or maybe at the back of the pack.

Cholesterol is produced by our liver and is used to make some hormones and vitamin D. The liver produces 1,000 milligrams alone. Imagine adding some more cholesterol with the food you eat. But it is hard to avoid cholesterol since practically everything you eat has cholesterol.

There are two types of cholesterol. What you should be trying to fight off is the ‘bad cholesterol’ or LDL which stands for low density lipoprotein. Now, some foods have high fiber content and good fatty acids which can reduce your cholesterol count.

1. Whole Grains and Oats
Whole grains and oats have a high content of soluble fiber which reduces LDL or low density lipoprotein. The soluble fiber minimizes the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream that is why in a study conducted about cholesterol, people who ate foods with high fiber had thinner carotid artery walls.

2. Fish
Fish contains what is called omega-3 fatty acids. This oil reduces your risk of developing blood clots or raising your blood pressure. You can find the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in mackerels, trouts, salmons, sardines and halibuts. What is more, fish have a special nutrient in them that you can never get anywhere else, even fish supplements.

3. Almonds and nuts
Besides the omega-3 fatty acids, another type of fatty acids reduces your cholesterol level. This is called the polyunsaturated fatty acids. These keep the blood vessels healthy. Nuts such as pistachios, walnuts and peanuts help reduce your risk for heart disease. As long as those nuts are not covered with salt or sugar. Try not to eat as much nuts as they have a high calorie count so a handful will do the job.

4. Oils
Oils such as olive oil, fish oil and flaxseed oil help you protect yourself from the risk of heart disease and can lower your blood pressure and avoid diabetes as well.

5. Pomegranate and Pomegranate juice
Studies have shown that pomegranate juice reduces plaque build up in artery walls and increases nitric oxide production which also reduces arterial plaque.

6. Avocados and Olives
Avocados and Olives are heart-healthy and they contain unsaturated fats which increase your levels of ‘good’ cholesterol. The fats present also protect you against heart diseases and diabetes.

Be sure to always watch your cholesterol level. We never know if we have consumed either the good cholesterol or the bad cholesterol that is why it will be very important to check in with your doctor once in a while.

Olive oil care has been around for over thousands of years and has been always used for skin care. It is hard to imagine that the great Cleopatra and her fellow Egyptians took advantage of this remedy to their skin problems. And it was not only the Egyptians who knew about the power of the olive; also the Greeks, Phoenicians and the Romans as well!

Olive oil has a lot of benefits. It will promote a smooth and radiant complexion, help maintain the elasticity of the skin, remedy those dry nails and condition and shine your hair! Olive oil has strong antioxidants like vitamins A and E which help repair and renew skin that has been damaged by overexposure under the sun, air pollution and any other modern day hazards. These antioxidants have the power to bring back the health to your skin.

Olive oil penetrates deeply into the skin and provides a long-lasting shield of moisture to keep skin smooth and healthy. It is best to use extra virgin olive oil that way you can be sure that they were not mixed with any other chemicals that may do more harm than good.

Of course, as women, it is a bit essential in their daily lives to wear some make-up to keep up with the appearances. But when they get home, the problem is how to remove it. Sometimes, water does not do the trick so they proceed to using a store-bought make-up remover. Olive oil can be used to remove make-up without causing irritation or damage to the skin.

What is more, if you are not allergic to any perfume or lotion, it will be nice to mix that in with some olive oil and rub on your skin. Not only will that detoxify your skin, but it will also leave you smelling good for a really long time. You do not have to worry at all about perspiration ruining that aroma on you.

Although olive oil takes some time to show some results, you can be assured that once the results start showing rapidly, that it will be longer lasting. That will mean you will waste less time and money going to and from beauty-care shops to buy those chemicals that may just harm your skin. And less energy because this is a home remedy and you do not really need the help of any expert.

The Vegetable soup diet is one of the healthiest ways to reduce your weight. This diet is planned for seven days which is said to make you lose up to 15 pounds. Soup is a must for all days and everything else can be a variety. In this diet, you have to make sure the other food supplements will be high in fiber and low in fat.

It is best to avoid junk foods and alcohol-based beverages, bread and sugar as they may interfere with the expected results. Besides slimming you down, the goal of this type of diet is to influence your bowel movement and digestion process by the amount of fiber you are taking in.

You need to eat different foods with the vegetable soup every day. Make sure to eat some cereal for a great source of fiber. When you are on the vegetable soup diet, you should change your beverage too. Drink black coffee, unsweetened tea, fruit juice (it is best if it is fresh fruit juice. Tetra packs of powdered juice may have added sugar in it.) and plenty of water.

7 Day Vegetable Soup Diet:
Day 1: Include all fruits in as much quantity as you want in your diet, except bananas, along with the soup.
Day 2: Include all vegetables in your diet, especially leafy green ones rather than starchy ones. You can even have one backed potato, without butter, and vegetable soup.
Day 3: Stick to fruit and vegetables only, with no potato. Vegetable soup can be taken as much as you want.
Day 4: For a change, take bananas and skimmed milk. You can take up to eight bananas and as much skimmed milk as you want. This will provide protein, carbohydrates, calcium and potassium to your body, lessening your craving for sweet and fatty foods. Vegetable soup can be taken as much as you want.
Day 5: Meat and tomatoes. Limit the amount of meat. Resort to red meat for Iron. Drink plenty of water to wash away the acid from the tomatoes. Vegetable soup to be taken according to your discretion.
Day 6: Day for meat and vegetables. Limiting the meat, soup and vegetable can be taken in ample quantity.
Day 7: Vegetables and brown rice. Take soup as much as you want.
Once you are done with the seven days, it will be okay to stop. Results are expected by the end of the diet.

Fast food is very convenient, quick and sometimes, inexpensive. Say, you are in a rush to get to school or you have an early meeting. Instead of skipping breakfast, you can just buy some fast food, whether it’s in a the form of a drive-thru, a vending machine or 24-hour convenience stores, anything that’s a grab-and-go is fast food.

Fast foods contain what is called ‘trans fat’ or partially hydrogenated oils. These oils make your tummy bulge and with that, it may cause insulin resistance, which is an evidence of developing diabetes. To top it off, these are high in sugar and high in fat so it may cause additional problems to the body.

What is more, some scientists say that with the excessive amounts of sugar, fast food has become very addicting. Over the course of the years since the dawn of fast food, the serving amount of their meals has increased. For example, what we consider as small today might have been a size medium to them already.

With the high amounts of sugar and fats per serving, our body starts craving for it. The addiction of people to fast food is as bad as having an addiction on drugs. Fats and sugars cause the change in a part of your brain where it will be hard to say no to these foods.

If you eat too much fast food, you will end up with health problems such as diabetes and obesity, not to mention your higher chances of having a heart attack due to the blockage of the coronary artery from too much cholesterol.

Remember, if fast food consists most of your daily meal, then it is something like killing yourself slowly. If, say you are in a 2,000 calorie daily diet, fast foods take up half of the calories and in just one meal! What is more, you are losing the proper nutrients your body needs to supply an adequate amount of energy in a whole day.

If that happens daily, you may just as well experience the pains of high blood pressure, increased levels of cholesterol, weak immune system, imbalance of blood sugar levels and the loss of the ability of your colon to function properly. It puts you in a risk to have strokes, diabetes, heart attacks, and even cancers.

It is okay to have a fast food meal as long as you have it once in a blue moon. It would not hurt you. As long as you accompany it with some exercise, you would be all right.

People these days are looking for fast and effective ways to lose weight. When exercising wasn’t enough, they turned to food, the main source of the problem. Although some foods make losing weight difficult, there are foods which we think cause us to gain some pounds instead of shed them. Some may surprise us.

Of course, we can’t deny the power of fruits and vegetables. Eating a meal consisting of fruits and vegetables as the majority enables you to burn 16% more calories. One of the best fruits there are is the grapefruit.

Since the grapefruit juice diet has gotten the attention of dieters everywhere, numerous researches have been done to verify the effectiveness. In all those researches, the grapefruit juice has passed.

Though none of the researches have able to pin-point the exact reason, there are still added benefits with the grapefruit such as cancer-fighting compounds and half of the fruit only has 39 calories! Other examples are apples, bananas, avocados, pumpkins and all the green vegetables.

Next on the list are almonds. Almonds are a rich source of Vitamin E, magnesium, fiber, phosphorus and protein. Although they are small and are mostly eaten as snacks, they are very filling so you don’t have to wonder what happens if you’re still hungry.

There’s another type of nut that dieters go for. There are the Brazil Nuts which contain selenium, an element which is required by our body to produce thyroid hormones which keeps our metabolism high. With a high metabolism, fat will burn faster.

Next up, there’s the oatmeal, the common breakfast food. Oatmeal is rich in fiber which, like the Brazil nuts, makes you feel full for long periods of time and still maintain the level of energy you started the day with. Buy the oatmeal that wasn’t added with artificial flavour as they will have higher levels of sugar than unseasoned oatmeal.

Fish has been known to have a fat-burning hormone called Leptin. This hormone regulates energy intake and expenditure which is very helpful in a daily diet. Fish also contain nutrients which are good for both your heart and brain.

Last but not the least, we can’t forget about red meat. Lean cuts of beef have a lot or iron in them which can actually boost your memory and help you recover from fatigue.

And for something to drink, coffee which has caffeine raises your metabolism which burns about 30-50 calories per day. Drinking a cup can last that boost in your metabolism for four hours. Plus, those who drink coffee are less prone to insulin resistance because of chlorogenic acid found in that cup of coffee.

Although these foods may assist you in your weight loss journey, it is always important to remember that it take hard work to achieve your goal. And if your goal is to lose some weight, just a little exercise would not hurt you. Think of the food as the reward to keep you going strong.

Acid reflux syndrome is something a person cannot ignore since this causes constant heart burns and nausea. A little insight on acid reflux: it is when acid from your stomach rises back to your esophagus. Most times, they don’t get all the way to the mouth which causes those severe heartburns. It can’t be self treated which is why the right information is important for you to know.

There are two types of refluxes. The first is an acid reflux which means that your stomach contents are too acidic. The second is an alkaline reflux which means your stomach contents are not acidic enough. That is why the daily diet is crucial to the person. Knowing the acidic balance in the stomach by the food they eat is best if you are trying to avoid those refluxes.

Foods allowed for people with acid reflux:
1. Lean meats, egg whites, fish with no fat, chicken breast (skinless)
2. Apples and Bananas
3. Baked potato, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, green beans, peas
4. White bread, pretzels, brown or white rice, oatmeal,
5. Mineral water. Mineral water is best drunk for a person with acid reflux because this drink does not contain harmful acids unlike those present in other beverages.
6. Baked potato chips, red liquorice, fat free cookies

But to those with the disease, it does not always matter that you are strict with your diet to avoid those painful heartburns and constant nausea. Sometimes, it’s about the quantity you eat. Acid reflux sometimes happens when a woman is pregnant, a person has asthma, or because of the person’s lifestyle such as smoking and over-eating.

Another thing is a person’s acid reflux is caused by something different from the others which is why making the diet plan is tedious but necessary. Below is a list of common foods that are safe to cross out from your diet list.

These are the foods and drinks that often cause the reflux:
1. High fat foods such as those that are fried, high fat meats and high fat milk.
2. Any drink that is not purified water contains one type of acid in them which may cause a huge imbalance in your stomach. Drinks such as coffee, tea, alcohol, soft drinks and fruit juices are best avoided.
3. Fruits that contain citrus acid. A common example is oranges. Grapefruit and lemons have citrus acid present in them too.
4. Sweets such as chocolates, spearmints, brownies and doughnuts which weaken the lower esophageal sphincter muscle – the muscle responsible for pushing down the food into the stomach.

What better way to get together and eat as a family than have a picnic in the great outdoors. It’s a new way to spend some quality time with them and let go of all that stress and tension you are all getting from school or from work. Besides the place for the picnic, the problem we all face is the food we’re going to bring. Adults and children crave for different tastes. While adults might crave for that sour or spicy tang, the children would want something sweet.

To solve that problem, the food to be packed must be enough to fill each and every stomach of the family. They must be portable, can be eaten whether it is still hot or turned cold. And of course, preferably, it does not need to be eaten using cutlery. It’ll just weigh down the basket.

1. Quiche. A baked open pie made from eggs and milk or cheese. It is filled with chopped meat, vegetables and cheese and may include some bits of tomato.

2. Club Sandwich, the favourite picnic snack. It is portable and easy to make. You can use wheat bread; add some bacon, lettuce and tomato plus additional toppings.

3. Salad is an excellent picnic fare. They are healthy and you can decide on any type of salad you want. It is good to share with the family and doesn’t add much weight on the basket. Top it all off with some salad dressing.

4. Fruits are a healthier alternative for candies and ice cream for dessert. Plus, they are naturally sweet so you don’t have to worry about your children complaining if it is too sour.

5. Dips. Sure, it isn’t much but if you bring some bags of tortilla chips and even celery sticks or carrot sticks, the family sure would love a little bit more flavour to them.

6. Fried Chicken. No need for the cutlery! Just use those fingers to munch on the meat. To make it just a tad bit healthier, go for pan-fried chicken. It won’t be too greasy and messy.

7. Of course, we shouldn’t forget some of the juice for the beverage. Try going with fresh fruit juice to get the feeling of the outdoors. Make sure to pack some ice and store them in a cooler so that they’ll stay cool during the duration of the trip and you can feel refreshed when you take a sip.

For a more relaxing time outdoors with less trash and mess, place the food in plastic containers and if possible, get separate containers so that every member of the family have equal share. Be sure to bring some extra in case you lack food.

There are only a few reasons why people are diagnosed with diabetes. It is either genetic, or caused by excessive amounts of sugar. It has since gotten worse because of the dawn of fast food and commercially made food products. Therefore, adding to the list of reasons is obesity or failure to exercise.

Diabetes comes with several symptoms depending on the type of diabetes you have. Those with type 1 diabetes often experience fatigue, nausea, vomiting and weight loss (regardless of their increase in appetite). Type 2 diabetics don’t experience many symptoms but they do, such as fatigue and blurred vision.

Dieticians have to calculate the total amount of calories a diabetic should have on a daily basis. The diet must be low in fat, sugar, salt and high in fruits and vegetables and starchy carbohydrate foods such as rice and bread.

For a source of carbohydrates, foods such as oatmeal, apples, avocados, carrots, mushrooms and tomatoes are good. These foods have low glycaemic index. Foods such as breakfast cereals (e.g. cornflakes and sugar-coated cereals), white bread, cakes, bagels, watermelon, potatoes and parsnip have high glycaemic index.

Protein is made up of chemicals called amino acids which are the building blocks of mostly all body tissue. It is healthy for your muscles and bones. Vegetarian diabetics don’t have to eat meat in order to get protein. Some vegetables are good sources of protein such as beans. Peanuts, pine nuts, chicken eggs, skinless chicken and lean cuts of meat that is non-intensively reared are other good sources.

A food rich in fiber is most important because this nutrient can lower the requirement for insulin and a high fiber diet means more chromium which helps in the treatment of diabetes. Whole wheat bread, fresh fruits and vegetables, beans and bran products (e.g. Wheat-bran cereal) are good sources.

Although diabetics should eat food with low fat, fat is a nutrient that is important in promoting healthy cell function. A diabetic must watch out for the type of fat they consume. A diabetic should consume fat that is high in unsaturated fat instead of food with saturated fat and trans fat. Pure vegetable oils, oily fish such as tuna, mackerel, tuna and herrings and nuts are high a good source. Foods such as butter, cream, skimmed milk and coconut oil may be eaten sparingly.

A more precise menu may be given by the dietician during a check-up. But the foods mentioned above are the common ones given.

A saying goes, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” It’s been said that people who usually skip breakfast have problems with concentration, metabolism and weight. Skipping breakfast can cause your blood sugars to be low; therefore you would be craving for something sweet and unhealthy which will ruin your metabolism.

Breakfast literally means ‘breaking the fast’. After a long night’s sleep, you need to refuel your empty stomach and the best way to do that is by eating a hearty and healthy breakfast. The vitamins and minerals present in the meal alone can power you through the whole day.

1. Go for whole grain. Whole grain cereals are healthier than sugar-coated cereals which may make you feel hyper in the morning and you may think that’s just what you need to stay awake the whole morning, but truth is you are just going to feel tired after a few hours.

If you are a rice eater, go for brown rice instead of white because more nutrients are present in the brown one. If you are in the mood to make some pancakes, or maybe some waffles, go for their whole wheat or multigrain counterparts.

2. If you feel like eating bread, go for some healthy spreads. Low-fat mayo and low-fat cheese can reduce your risk of metabolic syndrome.

3. Fresh fruits! What is a better way to start the day than by eating some fresh cut-up fruits to store some essential vitamins and minerals in that body to make sure your energy lasts? Eat some fruits such as grapefruits which have a lot of Vitamin C in it or maybe an apple which is low in calories and high in dietary fiber.

4. Some dessert would taste nice. Maybe yogurt can do just the thing. Make sure to go for low-fat instead of non-fat as it may contain much more sugar than expected. To add some taste to it, add some fresh fruits and maybe a little bit of whole grain cereal.

5. Cereals. If you’re looking for something fast to eat, this is just the thing. Go for the unsweetened cereal. Sugar-coated cereals tend to ruin your metabolism which makes you crave for food in between the actual meal times. A teaspoon of sugar won’t hurt as long as it is just one teaspoon. Top it off with some skimmed milk which is low in fat.

If in the mornings, you are rushing to get to school or to work, try preparing these breakfast foods at night and just keep them in the fridge. On your way out the door, you can grab the food and go, easy as that. Never try to skip your breakfast because it is as important as your sleep. If you lack sleep, you’ll be tired for the rest of the day. Much like if you skip breakfast, your energy will be running low.
